In 2008, a project management firm called us and asked us to attend a meeting at a job site where a new hospital was being built. We attended the meeting with the client team, who were responsible for getting this hospital built, outfitted and ready for the first patient day. Two weeks after this meeting, the project manager called and said the client wanted CMCI to take over the activation project.

We built the activation plan and proceeded to understand what would be required of both us and the team to ensure the hospital’s first patient day was successful. One of the issues we encountered was the medical equipment, furniture, and supplies deliveries. There was no plan for everything that would need to be delivered and installed and the management staff had little experience with an activation. Further, the medical equipment planners wanted to send everything to a warehouse and deliver to the job site as the space became available and ready. As we understood more about the client’s needs, the construction schedule and when the space would be ready for these deliveries, we were able to provide a very sensible, cost-effective solution.

We proposed having the equipment delivered directly to the site rather than having all of the equipment delivered to a warehouse, cataloged, loaded onto a truck again and being re-delivered. We began to build a schedule that allowed all of the deliveries to come to the new building with extra attention on ensuring vendors were not in conflict with one another for space or elevators. Further, the impact of a direct delivery resulted in the cost savings of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

As we provided the solution for direct ship, there was no personnel hired to receive this equipment and oversee the delivery and installation. We provided personnel who were on site every day for three months as the equipment came in. We worked with all of the vendors to ensure they were successful as well as working with the general contractor to ensure it was able to appropriately install the larger equipment in an efficient manner. In fact, this process was so successful that the CEO requested we stay on site to assist her new staff take over the dock. We stayed an additional 30 days.

Further, the solutions provided assisted the facilities team and the healthcare team in truly focusing on the task at hand, getting the building open and passing all of the city-required inspections as well as the state requirements.
