Planning Office Space for Employees’ Return to Work

Return Office

With the onset of COVID-19, including the Omicron variant, many businesses decided to implement a work from home policy to protect the wellbeing of their employees. A few years later, the workforce is beginning to return to the office. This means facilities managers must figure out ways to adapt their workplaces to keep team members safe. If you are brainstorming how to transition your pre-COVID space to meet post-COVID necessities, here are a few options to consider.

Some facilities are converting workstations into open sections for team meetings. The large areas can be split into more comfortable workspaces with tables and couches where a project team can gather and comfortably get their group work finished. When a project team does not require an in-person meeting, they can distance in place or spend their individual hours working remotely. An added benefit to this method is that the office building is also repurposed in a way that improves meaningful participation and continues the sense of community companies have worked so hard to create.

Many companies are also focused on upgrading their HVAC systems to improve ventilation in the office. Doing this will dilute airborne concentrations and increase the air quality in your facility, thus decreasing the possibility for contamination. Consider reading up on the latest from the CDC’s official website for updates and tips on what to do when you or your coworkers return to the office.

Other solutions include enacting one-way hallways, staggering arrival and departure times for employees, and shortening office hours to allow time for a thorough cleaning every day.
