CMCI was hired in 2018 to manage the activation, transition and move of a hospital that expanded in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. The requirements were to build and guide the team to ensure a successful First Patient Day for the Emergency Department, including 40 operating rooms, life flight, four intensive care floors, a new café and a new loading dock and materials management area.
CMCI successfully created a 986 item task list of activation activities for the full team. CMCI utilized this task list to guide the team to success. How? CMCI effectively managed the full team along with the equipment planners and installers, furniture teams and installers, art consultant and installation as well as conducting mock moves to ensure patient safety during patient moves. Clearly, a move for a healthcare organization has unique risks requiring strategic handling. CMCI prepared the overall schedule for all incoming equipment, furniture, art, supplies, and food. Further, CMCI managed the dock, the schedule and the receiving and reporting for all incoming goods.
Additionally, the client was scheduled to renovate areas that had been vacated 18 months after the first move. CMCI created a plan for the furniture and equipment to be stored on site for the phase 2 project, saving the client thousands of dollars in storage costs.
Through CMCI’s leadership and experience the client was successful in renumbering their operating rooms during the activation period, saving both money and resources following the renovation.
The metrics used for measuring a successful healthcare organization’s transition and move are patient safety and ease with which the client’s staff transitions into the new space. This client was up and operational (no pun intended) within minutes of the patients moving. Patients and their families were safely transitioned to the new rooms.
