SUMMARY:AIA - Glenwood Cemetery Visitor Center Tour #2
DESCRIPTION:Glenwood Cemetery\, originally established in the early 1870s\, holds historical significance in the City of Houston as the final resting location for numerous influential figures in Houston’s history. It has become a tourist destination over the years due to its picturesque\, garden-style grounds\, as well as for its rare glimpse into Houston’s founding generations. The new Glenwood Visitors Center will become a main gathering space for families\, visitors\, and the community alike – it will be used for funerary services\, genealogy research\, and as a gathering space for Houston’s local groups and civic organizations.\nThe Visitors Center will stand as a contemporary architectural gem that marries modern design with the rich\, historical context of its surroundings. Because respect of the existing fabric was of utmost importance to the clients and the design team\, the building is carefully integrated into the overall master plan\, ensuring a seamless transition from the historical environment to the contemporary architecture. The Center\, designed by Dillon Kyle Architects and constructed by Bellows Construction\, was completed in September of 2023. \nJoin the design architect for a tour of the new Glenwood Cemetery Visitor Center\, where you’ll learn about the inspirations and challenges that shaped the design of the Center today.

SUMMARY:AIA: 2023 Sandcastle Competition

Call before you dig \nABOUT THE 2023 EVENT\nThe AIA Sandcastle Competition is a fundraising event for AIA Houston and ArCH Foundation as well as one of the top five revenue-generating events for the City of Galveston. Competing teams have their eyes and shovels set on winning the prestigious Gold Bucket Award. Firms begin months in advance generating ideas\, developing designs\, and assigning duties. On the day of the event\, the teams – stretched along the beach front – meticulously sculpt their piles of sand and work non-stop for five hours. \nTHE SAND SCULPTURES: Please respect the hard work of our participants by not touching any of the sand sculptures even after the event. Many spectators visit the beach the next day\, on Sunday\, to view and enjoy the sculptures. \n  \nCheckout other events on our website\, CMCI Calendar \nJoin the Mail List
